We went to visit Aspen Rest Home this morning!
Jess and Sharon took us in Sharon’s van to visit the residents at Aspen. We took some music to sing, some books to read and some ribbons to wave. We put our safety seats into Sharon’s van, Jess strapped us in and off we went.
When we arrived we had to use hand sanitiser when we first got to Aspen and Sharon had to sign us in. Isiah met us and helped us walk down to the lounge to meet the residents. All the old people were sitting in a circle. Some were asleep and some were smiling and ready to talk to us.
Jess helped us sing songs for the old people and they clapped when we had finished each song. We gave each of the old people a rainbow ribbon and when we sang they waved their ribbons with us.
Each of us had a book we had chosen to take to Aspen and we asked the residents to read them to us.We had a lovely time talking about the books and chatting.
We said goodbye and then came back to Shalom in the van. We had fun. It was different and we will spend some time talking about it with Jess when we are back at Shalom .
Thank you for the lovely trip.

Over the past weeks the Yellow Group ( our 4 year old children) have been thriving on their new knowledge and information that they have been learning about volcanoes. The idea to focus on volcanoes came out of the children’s strong interest in them.
The children were often making requests to make a volcano in the sandpit however we discovered they didn’t understand the concept behind the activity. Together we have identified the key parts of a volcano- magma chamber, vent, crater, lava and magma. The children now understand the terms active, dormant and extinct.
We explored even further looking in to the layers of what makes up the earth. We had lots of fun being involved in a number of science experiments. We hope you have already heard about the exciting discoveries your child has made about volcanoes.
One of our teacher’s has even developed a waiata/song we sing about Volcanoes- why don’t you visit us?
We would love to sing it for you !!
On Monday 27 February 2017 March we have our annual Fathers night. A great time is had by all (we hope). The children and Dads or Grandad’s ( or other significant male role models ) arrive with their takeaway dinners and everyone gathers outside to eat their kai/dinner.
Everyone gets to play together and the Shalom children can show their men around Shalom. This year we are having a Human Blender so come and see what that means.
It will be great to see a number of our Shalom whanau/families join together for a picnic tea at Kulim Park on March 17th, 2017 from 5.30-7.30pm
A relaxing night, eating takeaways, chatting and getting to know each other and of course tamariki/children running around having lots of fun.
Our Family Picnic is an annual event, organised as a social time to get to know each other. As kaiako/teachers, we love having a relaxing time getting to know our whanau/families and seeing them build relationships with each other.
